How to Edge Your Lawn

How to Edge a Garden Bed

April is quickly coming to a close and The Garden Continuum has been very busy with landscape renovations, projects and maintenance. This week, TGC's video blog focuses on how to edge your garden beds and lawn. Check out the video below for some great tips.

Spraying out a line or laying a hose can help shape the edge

I really need to edge my lawn.....mostly my gardens out back. Took all the bricks away and am hoping for a cleaner look. Think this article with help guide me through it. Looks like I need to buy the right tools. Thanks.

NOTE: It took a long time to get through this very helpful video. Maybe it was my computer. Lots of stops and starts, but I did get to the end. Can't wait to get started.

This comment brings up a good discussion point about using brick or cobbles to edge a landscape bed. They do not eliminate the need to edge. If you decide to use brick or cobbles, install them tightly abutted against each other and then be prepared to edge the lawn off the back side of them at least once a year to keep the grass from growing through. If you skip this step, the grass roots will grow right through the smallest gap and may even grow under or over the edge. Using small natural stones makes even more work because you can't effectively use an edger to maintain the lawn due to the irregularity of the edge line. You will definitely end up having to hand WEED the border to keep the stones clear of grass. Okay...who has time for that?

Creating an edge is hard work, but one created, it's easy to maintain. Using a sharp spade edge to create the edge is still the best. After that , using a line trimmer on a weekly or bi weekly basis, turning the head vertical will edge the beds quickly. A straight shaft line trimmer works the best and gives you leverage and control vs. a curved shaft line trimmer.I also edge with it along sidewalks and cuebs thus eliminating the need of a hard blade edger.

Beautiful yet handy tips to make a smooth edge for installation of a design. I'd used colored tuff tiles on the edge to create a pattern. I also like the cobbles installation idea of @Monique.
